Autonomous AI agents initiated 16.2 million transfers over the past 30 days using the x402 protocol, according to data from Token Terminal. The activity highlights the operational shift toward machine-to-machine commerce, where software agents pay for digital services and API access without human intervention.
The Token Terminal data indicates that Coinbase’s Layer-2 network, Base, led the transaction volume with 9.5 million transfers. Polygon followed as the second most active environment for the protocol, recording 5.6 million transfers during the same period. The data also shows that USDC accounts for most of the automated payment activity, although the cited figures do not specify its exact share.
The next wave of blockchain users may not be humans.

The x402 protocol is an open standard built upon the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. It functions as a live payment rail that allows AI agents to settle costs for inference, data, or computing resources on-chain. This infrastructure eliminates the need for agents to maintain traditional subscriptions or manual credit card approvals, enabling real-time, metered payments for digital services.
Analysis from Chainalysis suggests the total cumulative volume for the protocol has reached between 100 million and 119 million transactions by mid-2026. The Chainalysis report notes a steepening growth curve in agentic payments compared with activity levels recorded in late 2025. The cumulative figures cover a broader period than the 30-day Token Terminal snapshot, so the two datasets provide different views of x402 adoption.
Infrastructure and Integration for Agentic Commerce
The rise in volume follows several infrastructure deployments designed to facilitate autonomous financial activity. Coinbase recently introduced “Coinbase for Agents,” a toolset that allows AI to manage portfolios and execute payments within sandboxed environments. The documentation for this tool confirms integration with x402 for standardized on-chain settlement.
On the Algorand network, the GoPlausible x402 Facilitator was launched to assist developers in routing and monitoring micro-payments for software agents. These tools are part of a broader push to standardize machine payments, supported by the x402 Global Challenge, an initiative involving industry entities including Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe to develop paid Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and metered inference tools.
While the protocol remains in a growth phase, its current deployment is concentrated on Layer-2 networks where transaction costs are low enough to support high-frequency micro-payments. Further adoption will depend on continued integration between AI platforms and blockchain settlement layers, as well as whether developers and users adopt machine-driven payments at greater scale.
