Ronin Ties Builder Rewards to NFT Activity

Ronin's Proof of Distribution ties NFT and onchain activity to builder rewards after its Ethereum L2 migration, with Season 5 nearing 2M RON distributed.

Ronin’s NFT economy is now feeding directly into the incentive system that rewards developers building on the gaming-focused Ethereum Layer 2. According to Ronin’s October ecosystem update, Proof of Distribution has reached its fifth season and is expected to distribute more than 2 million RON to builders by the end of Season 5, with rewards determined by measurable onchain contributions rather than fixed grants.

NFT trading is one component of that model, but the often-cited $71 million figure belongs to an earlier period. Ronin’s official 2024 year-in-review reported that NFT volume increased 134% year over year to $71 million in 2024, alongside 17 new games and a fivefold expansion in available NFT collections. Those figures are historical benchmarks rather than measurements of current 2026 activity.

NFT Volume Now Feeds Builder Incentives

Ronin’s economic structure changed materially when the network migrated from a sovereign Layer 1 to an Ethereum Layer 2 in May 2026. The transition reduced annual RON emissions from 45 million to 5 million and redirected future emissions toward builders through Proof of Distribution. The reward model links RON payouts to activity generated by registered application contracts rather than distributing emissions primarily through the former validator structure.

At launch, Builder Score assigned 20.95% of its weighting to NFT volume, alongside DEX volume, contract activity, gas spending and user metrics. Sky Mavis said those percentages could change monthly, and the system has continued evolving through Season 5. NFT trading is therefore an economically relevant input, but it is not a standalone measure of developer contribution or the dominant metric by definition.

Season 5 has introduced another layer through RON Conviction, which can amplify or reduce Builder Scores based on a project’s community alignment with RON. The incentive system now combines transactional activity with an additional token-alignment multiplier, making a simple comparison of NFT volume between projects insufficient to determine eventual payouts.

Gaming Activity Continues Beyond Axie Infinity

Ronin’s gaming footprint has also expanded beyond Axie Infinity. Yakkamon has moved through its NFT mint and pre-registration phase, while Ronin reported in October that more than 150,000 trainers had registered ahead of early access. Those registrations demonstrate pre-launch interest, but they should not be treated as equivalent to active players or sustained NFT liquidity.

Other projects are already operating in playable environments. Aquarium Quest launched an alpha playtest with a 15,000 RON reward pool, while Yakkamon is preparing a staged late-2026 rollout around its creature-collection economy. These releases broaden the set of applications capable of contributing transactions, NFT trades and other activity to Ronin’s post-migration incentive framework.

The more relevant current story is therefore not that Ronin generated $71 million in NFT volume two years ago. Ronin has converted metrics such as NFT trading into inputs for a live builder-reward system after becoming an Ethereum Layer 2, creating a direct connection between measurable application activity and RON emissions. Whether that structure produces durable growth will depend on recurring trading and gameplay rather than historical volume alone.
