Celo x402 Adds cNGN and Completes Ripio wFIAT Stack

Celo's x402 facilitator adds cNGN, wMXN, wCLP and wPEN, expanding agentic payments to 10 stablecoins across eight currencies.

Editorial portrait of a fintech engineer at a sleek desk, monitors show Celo x402 and Ripio wFIAT with cNGN and Latin currencies.

Celo Core Co. has expanded its native x402 facilitator with cNGN and three additional Ripio stablecoins, extending machine-to-machine payments across eight currencies. According to the official Celo announcement, the addition of wMXN, wCLP and wPEN completes Ripio’s six-asset wFIAT suite on Celo, while cNGN introduces Nigerian naira-denominated agent payments. The facilitator now supports 10 stablecoins covering eight currencies.

The newly added assets join USDC, USDT, USA₮ and Ripio’s previously supported wARS, wBRL and wCOP. Celo said more than 900,000 x402 payments have already been processed from over 4,000 payers across its agentic infrastructure. Those figures demonstrate repeated payment activity but should not be interpreted as 4,000 individual people or as a measure of settlement value, because one payer can generate many low-value machine transactions.

Local Currencies Enter the x402 Payment Flow

x402 embeds payment requirements directly into HTTP interactions, allowing software to encounter a priced resource, authorize payment and continue the request programmatically. Celo Core Co.’s facilitator handles verification and on-chain settlement for supported assets. The latest integration allows an agent to pay in Argentine pesos, Brazilian reais, Colombian pesos, Mexican pesos, Chilean pesos, Peruvian soles or Nigerian naira without first converting the payment amount into a dollar stablecoin.

Ripio’s six wFIAT assets use Permit2, with the initial approval sponsored through Celo’s facilitator infrastructure. cNGN uses Permit2 as well, but its setup differs: the payer must complete a one-time approval before subsequent payments can use the authorization flow. The distinction means cNGN is supported for agentic payments but does not currently provide the same fully sponsored first-use experience as the wFIAT assets.

The three dollar stablecoins use a different mechanism. USDC, USDT and USA₮ support EIP-3009-style transfer authorization without requiring an initial Permit2 approval. Celo’s facilitator therefore abstracts several token authorization models behind one payment interface rather than forcing every supported stablecoin into an identical settlement path. That architecture is designed to let applications quote an exact currency amount and settle that same asset without performing an FX conversion inside the facilitator.

x402 Expands Across Multiple Blockchain Payment Rails

Celo’s implementation joins a growing set of network-specific x402 facilitators. Algorand developers are already using x402 for mainnet USDC micropayments, while Ripple and Privy support programmable XRPL wallets for XRP and RLUSD agent payments. The common protocol standard does not make these implementations operationally identical, because supported assets, authorization methods, wallet infrastructure and settlement networks remain implementation-specific.

Machine payments are also being integrated directly into computing services. io.net can trigger x402 USDC payments when autonomous agents need additional GPU capacity, turning payment into part of an automated infrastructure request. Celo’s differentiating focus is local-currency coverage, allowing agent software to transact in currencies associated with users and businesses in Latin America and Nigeria rather than relying exclusively on dollar-denominated settlement.

The governance layer is separate from Celo’s implementation. Coinbase contributed x402 to the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation in July, creating an open-governance body responsible for the protocol standard, while Celo Core Co. continues operating its hosted facilitator independently. The latest rollout therefore expands one production implementation of x402 rather than changing the protocol itself.

The more meaningful adoption indicators will be recurring payer activity, settlement value and the number of independent services accepting the newly supported currencies. Completing Ripio’s wFIAT stack and adding cNGN expands the available payment rails immediately, but asset support alone does not establish how much commercial demand those local-currency routes will generate.
