Tether Assets Reach $191B as Reserve Buffer Nears $8B

Tether reports $191.45B in Q3 reserve assets and a $7.95B surplus as Treasury income helps nearly double its reserve buffer.

Tether’s reserve assets reached $191.45 billion at the end of the third quarter as the stablecoin issuer nearly doubled the capital held above its reported liabilities. According to the company’s September 30 BDO assurance report, Tether International held $191.451 billion in reserves against $183.496 billion in liabilities, producing a $7.955 billion surplus. Of those liabilities, $183.470 billion related specifically to digital tokens issued.

The October 30 report was prepared by Tether management and subjected to reasonable assurance procedures by BDO under ISAE 3000. BDO said the figures were fairly presented in all material respects under the stated accounting criteria, while emphasizing that the document is a point-in-time reserve report rather than a complete set of IFRS financial statements. The attestation therefore provides assurance over the September 30 balances without extending that conclusion to Tether’s financial position on later dates.

Treasury Assets Remain at the Center of Reserves

Tether reported $139.58 billion in cash, cash equivalents and other short-term deposits. That category included $122.84 billion of direct U.S. Treasury bills, $9.52 billion in overnight reverse repos and $7.18 billion in term reverse repos. Tether separately said its combined direct and indirect Treasury exposure reached $132.4 billion. Short-duration U.S. government-linked instruments continue to form the core of the reserve portfolio, alongside $19.08 billion of precious metals, $8.37 billion of Bitcoin and $14.18 billion of secured loans.

That composition helped generate approximately $1.5 billion in Q3 net operating profit, according to Tether, with Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements providing most of the income. Year-to-date operating profit reached $4.5 billion. The reserve buffer increased to $7.95 billion from $4.11 billion at the end of June, considerably faster than the change in token liabilities during the quarter.

Digital-token liabilities actually declined slightly from $183.622 billion at June 30 to $183.470 billion at September 30. That movement should not be interpreted simply as a contraction caused by blockchain burns or individual treasury transfers. Tether distinguishes issued tokens from inventory held in its treasury, while USDT can also migrate between networks without changing global supply. Chain swaps, redemptions, treasury inventory and new issuance must be reconciled before individual onchain movements can be treated as net supply changes.

Reserve Growth and Token Controls Measure Different Risks

The larger buffer arrives as the overall stablecoin market continues expanding. Aggregate dollar-pegged supply had already reached $310.6 billion in September, with USDT accounting for the largest individual share. A larger reserve surplus strengthens the accounting cushion between Tether’s reported assets and liabilities, but it does not mean every reserve asset carries identical liquidity or market risk.

BDO explicitly noted that reserve valuations assume normal trading conditions and may not reflect extraordinary illiquidity at custodians or counterparties. The portfolio also extends beyond Treasury instruments into gold, Bitcoin, equities, other investments and secured loans. Reserve sufficiency and immediate liquidity are related but distinct concepts, particularly during stressed redemption conditions.

Issuer controls form another separate layer. Tether can freeze addresses holding USDT, and more than $514 million was immobilized across hundreds of addresses during one 2026 enforcement period. Those controls affect whether particular tokens can be transferred, but frozen balances should not be confused with a reduction in contractual token liabilities or a burn of outstanding supply.

The Q3 attestation therefore shows a balance sheet with relatively stable token liabilities but substantially greater reported excess reserves. Tether’s most material quarter-over-quarter change was not rapid USDT issuance, but the expansion of its reserve cushion to nearly $8 billion while Treasury-linked assets continued generating operating income.
