KSD Builds Avalanche Connectivity for Korea Tokenized Securities

Korea Securities Depository is building Avalanche connectivity for tokenized securities as South Korea targets onchain capital markets from February 2027.

South Korea’s central securities infrastructure is being prepared to connect with Avalanche as the country moves toward regulated tokenized securities beginning in 2027. The Korea Securities Depository is developing a multi-ledger platform capable of interfacing with Avalanche alongside enterprise blockchain systems, positioning the network as one potential rail within a broader regulated market architecture.

Avalanche highlighted the development in an official announcement, saying KSD is building infrastructure connectivity with the network. Separately, Korean financial-industry reporting based on KSD’s distributed-ledger standards identifies Avalanche, Hyperledger Besu and Hyperledger Fabric among the technologies the platform is designed to support. The architecture is therefore multi-chain rather than an exclusive Avalanche deployment.

The infrastructure project is being implemented by Samsung SDS, which won KSD’s platform contract earlier this year. Samsung SDS plans to convert a 2025 technology-validation testbed into a production system by February 2027, connecting KSD’s existing electronic-securities account infrastructure with distributed-ledger data.

February 2027 Starts Korea’s First Tokenization Phase

The technical timetable aligns with South Korea’s new legal framework. According to the Financial Services Commission, amendments to the Electronic Registration Act and Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act take effect on February 4, 2027. That date begins the first stage of tokenized securities issuance rather than completing the country’s entire onchain transition.

Phase one initially covers privately pooled money-market funds and bonds reserved for institutional investors, unlisted shares using trust structures and publicly offered fractional-investment securities. A later phase is intended to broaden tokenization to all publicly offered securities, while the final stage targets onchain payment infrastructure linked to stablecoins.

The phased structure builds on the three-stage securities roadmap previously outlined by the FSC. Importantly, progression beyond the first phase remains conditional rather than automatic. Stablecoin-based settlement is a future objective, not functionality scheduled to go live with KSD’s February platform launch.

KSD will occupy a central role because distributed ledgers can become legally recognized securities records under the amended framework. Proposed subordinate regulations require eligible ledgers to be shared among multiple account-management entities alongside KSD, maintaining institutional controls around ownership records even when blockchain infrastructure is used.

Avalanche Enters a Multi-Chain Capital Markets Stack

KSD’s system is intended to include a gateway, blockchain-node management, distributed-ledger infrastructure and real-time monitoring of tokenized securities issuance and circulation. The blockchain layer supplements Korea’s established securities-registration machinery rather than replacing KSD with a public ledger.

Private-sector infrastructure is developing in parallel. Hanwha Investment & Securities has completed a tokenized-securities platform developed by FairSquare Lab that can operate across multiple networks and currently uses Avalanche, while also supporting Hyperledger Besu. That deployment precedes the February 2027 regulatory start and provides a separate example of Avalanche being incorporated into Korean securities technology.

The development fits a broader institutional use of Avalanche for tokenized assets. Products such as the NYLIM-managed HYB fund have already been deployed on Avalanche, while comparable market-infrastructure institutions elsewhere are pursuing multi-blockchain tokenization architectures. The common model is increasingly interoperability between regulated financial records and multiple blockchain environments rather than dependence on a single public network.

South Korea’s roadmap could eventually extend that architecture into cash settlement, but the FSC has deliberately separated securities tokenization from the later stablecoin phase. For Avalanche, the immediate development is connectivity with institutional securities infrastructure; it is not yet evidence that Korean stocks, bonds and funds are settling end-to-end on Avalanche. The more consequential milestone arrives in February, when KSD’s production platform and the new legal framework are expected to move tokenized securities from testing toward regulated operation.
