OpenSea Adds Koda #7940 to Flagship NFT Collection

OpenSea adds Yuga Labs’ Koda #7940 to its Flagship Collection, expanding its curated holdings of culturally significant NFTs and digital art.

OpenSea has added Koda #7940 from Yuga Labs’ Otherside ecosystem to its Flagship Collection, expanding the marketplace’s corporate reserve of NFTs selected for their perceived cultural and historical significance. The acquisition brings one of Otherside’s original Koda characters into a portfolio OpenSea says it intends to hold primarily for the long term.

OpenSea described Koda #7940 as an “original inhabitant of Otherside,” referring to the characters that first appeared within Otherdeed land NFTs when Otherside launched in 2022. The Kodas were later separated into their own Ethereum collection through Yuga Labs’ decoupling process. Koda #7940 is now part of the standalone Otherside Koda ERC-721 collection rather than remaining embedded inside its original Otherdeed.

OpenSea has not disclosed what it paid for the acquisition. The marketplace’s historical item data records Koda #7940’s previous sale at 0.94 ETH, but a prior sale price should not be treated as OpenSea’s acquisition cost unless the corresponding transaction is identified as the Flagship purchase.

Flagship Collection Operates as OpenSea’s NFT Reserve

OpenSea launched the Flagship Collection in September 2025 with a commitment of more than $1 million toward acquiring digital art and collectibles. The company calls the portfolio its NFT reserve and a “living museum,” with a small internal committee choosing acquisitions with input from external advisors. The program represents assets owned and held by OpenSea, rather than a general badge awarded to entire collections.

OpenSea says the committee has sole authority over purchases, while employees with financial interests in collections under consideration must recuse themselves. Information about planned acquisitions is also restricted internally before announcements. The marketplace says its purchases are curatorial decisions and are not intended as investment recommendations or endorsements for users to buy the same NFTs.

Koda #7940 joins an increasingly varied set of Flagship holdings. OpenSea previously selected Nakamigos from the profile-picture segment, while alignDRAW #2438 brought a 2015 text-to-image experiment into the reserve. The additions show OpenSea using the collection to represent different parts of NFT history rather than concentrating exclusively on the highest-volume projects.

Kodas Remain Tied to the Otherside Ecosystem

Kodas originated inside Otherdeeds before Yuga Labs introduced a decoupling process in 2023 that allowed holders to separate qualifying characters into standalone Koda NFTs. Yuga said the resulting Koda assets generally receive a broad commercial license, while Otherdeed Expanded land remains subject to more limited personal-use rights. Ownership of a Koda therefore carries defined licensing rights, but it does not transfer Yuga Labs’ underlying intellectual property wholesale to the NFT holder.

The collection remains an active secondary market. A recent OpenSea snapshot showed approximately 8,325 standalone Kodas, a 5% creator fee and roughly $54.5 million in cumulative trading volume. Those figures describe historical marketplace activity and current collection structure, not the economic value created by OpenSea’s individual acquisition.

That distinction matters because curatorial purchases can provide provenance and visibility without demonstrating broader market demand. Similar concentration effects have appeared when large individual purchases materially influenced CryptoPunks trading volume. A Flagship acquisition establishes OpenSea’s ownership and curatorial judgment, but it does not by itself show that Koda liquidity, buyer participation or valuations have increased.

For Koda #7940, the measurable development is therefore straightforward: OpenSea has added a specific Otherside asset to a corporate NFT reserve backed by a stated $1 million-plus acquisition commitment. Its significance inside the Flagship Collection comes from OpenSea’s decision to preserve it as part of its account of NFT culture, while any wider market impact on Otherside Kodas remains separate and still requires trading data to establish.
