Solana Postpones Shanghai Event After Registration Surge and Police Reports

Solana postpones its Shanghai Accelerate event after registrations exceeded local limits, while reports of police presence raise questions.

The Solana Foundation postponed its Solana Accelerate China 2026 event in Shanghai on October 16 after registrations reportedly exceeded local attendance limits, while attendees described police officers arriving at the venue. The disruption interrupted the opening stop of Solana’s four-city China tour, shortly after the blockchain ecosystem promoted a new office and advertising campaign in Shanghai.

In an October 16 statement, Solana Foundation President Lily Liu said event registrations had quadrupled overnight, substantially exceeding the attendance cap organizers had registered with local authorities. Liu attributed the increase to publicity surrounding Solana’s Shanghai promotional campaign and said the event was postponed to comply with local requirements.

The explanation followed an earlier notice to registered attendees citing last-minute logistical considerations. According to the South China Morning Post, social media accounts described local police arriving at the venue before the scheduled program began. Other reports indicated that attendees waited outside for more than an hour.

The reported police presence has not been established as the cause of the postponement. Liu did not address the officers directly, and no public statement from local authorities identified a regulatory investigation or enforcement action against Solana.

Shanghai Disruption Follows Solana’s China Expansion

The postponement came shortly after Solana publicized office space in Shanghai’s Pudong district, overlooking the Huangpu River, alongside prominent advertising displayed on the city’s skyline. The campaign attracted attention because mainland China maintains extensive restrictions on cryptocurrency-related financial activities.

Those restrictions were reinforced in February 2026, when the People’s Bank of China and seven other government agencies issued an official regulatory notice. The rules reaffirmed prohibitions covering cryptocurrency trading, token fundraising and related financial services, while establishing additional requirements for certain tokenization activities.

However, restrictions on cryptocurrency financial services do not automatically establish that blockchain developer conferences are prohibited. Solana’s Shanghai agenda focused on network infrastructure, artificial intelligence, robotics and developer participation rather than operating a cryptocurrency exchange.

The incident also resembles an interruption at a Solana-related event in Shenzhen in October 2025. Organizers attributed that earlier disruption to overcrowding and public-safety concerns. The available evidence does not establish that both events resulted from the same regulatory circumstances.

Meanwhile, Solana continues its technical development independently of these regional outreach activities. Its upcoming Alpenglow mainnet activation, scheduled for October 21, is intended to introduce a faster consensus mechanism. The network has also activated Transaction V1, expanding transaction capacity for more complex applications.

Remaining China Events Await Confirmation

The foundation’s Accelerate China schedule lists three additional events: Hangzhou on October 18, Shenzhen on October 20 and Beijing on October 22.

No corresponding cancellation or postponement had been announced for those remaining stops in the information available on October 16. Organizers said registered Shanghai attendees would receive updates once new arrangements were confirmed, but provided no replacement date.

For Solana, the immediate consequence is a delayed developer gathering rather than a demonstrated restriction on its blockchain infrastructure. Liu’s explanation identifies attendance compliance as the reason for postponement, while the circumstances surrounding the reported police visit remain unresolved.

The episode illustrates the operational complexity of organizing cryptocurrency-associated events in mainland China, where technical ecosystem development and regulated financial activities remain subject to different considerations.
