Sui Cumulative Accounts Cross 248 Million

Sui reaches 248 million active accounts as on-chain participation continues expanding rapidly from 8.6 million accounts in early 2024.

Sui has surpassed 248 million cumulative accounts, extending the rapid expansion of addresses that have interacted with the Layer 1 since its May 2023 mainnet launch. The milestone was highlighted by the Sui Community on October 4 and is reflected on the SuiScan mainnet explorer. The 248 million figure measures accounts that have completed at least one transaction over Sui’s lifetime, not the number of users currently active on the network.

That distinction materially changes how the number should be interpreted. Token Terminal currently measures roughly 954,700 unique transaction-sending addresses over a rolling 30-day window and about 469,600 over the latest weekly period. Cumulative accounts and recurring active addresses describe different dimensions of network growth, and neither can be treated as a direct count of unique human users because one person or application can control multiple addresses.

Account Growth Outpaces Current Active Usage

Sui’s cumulative account count has expanded dramatically from the roughly 8.6 million reported in early 2024 and approximately 240 million by June 2026. More recent tracker data indicates that the network had already moved above the 248 million threshold by late September. The trajectory confirms sustained address creation over several years, but cumulative growth does not establish equivalent growth in retained users or economic activity.

Other network metrics provide a different view of activity. Token Terminal counts approximately 5.2 billion confirmed Sui transactions over its three-year dataset, while applying separate methodologies to weekly users, monthly active addresses and network fees. Sui formalized a data partnership with Token Terminal in June to make standardized financial and usage metrics available through the analytics platform. The partnership improves measurement and comparability, but the resulting metrics still need to be interpreted according to their individual definitions.

Live application activity also offers stronger evidence of usage than cumulative accounts alone. Sui is already being used as a settlement rail for gasless stablecoin payments through Daya, while institutional participants have been testing Bitcoin-backed financial infrastructure through Hashi. Those deployments identify specific workloads on the network rather than inferring adoption solely from account creation.

Programmable Tunnels Test a Separate Scaling Layer

Sui has also been experimenting with programmable tunnels, offchain payment and state channels that settle back to mainnet when closed. During a July 4 public experiment involving AI agents, payments, games and messaging, the system peaked at 6,086,766 transactions per second. That performance was achieved through offchain tunnels and should not be presented as the normal transaction throughput of Sui mainnet.

The distinction matters because infrastructure capacity and sustained network demand are separate measurements. Sui’s mainnet has previously experienced reliability challenges, including a settlement stall that temporarily paused transaction processing. High experimental throughput demonstrates technical capacity under a particular architecture, while production adoption also depends on recurring users, economic activity and reliable settlement under ordinary conditions.

Sui’s 248 million-account milestone is therefore substantial as a measure of cumulative network participation, but it should not be read as 248 million currently active users. The stronger picture comes from combining lifetime account growth with rolling active-address counts, transaction activity and measurable application usage, which together show a large historical footprint alongside a much smaller base of addresses interacting with the network on a recurring basis.
